Communities & Territories
On Public Sphere & Public Libraries

Beirut, November 17-21, 2007

This seminar and the three consecutive workshops organized in cooperation with the Italian cultural network aMAZElab seek to offer a discursive and visual presentation of the concept of “public space and public art” in Beirut and by drawing on international experiences. The opening seminar brings together international and Lebanese writers, architects, sociologists, and artists. It is designed to be inter-disciplinary in order to generate a cross-fertilization between visual and academic approaches. The goal of the workshops is to produce under the tutelage of Lebanese and International experts texts, flayers, installations, and photography that showcase how citizens of Beirut with different socio-economic and religious backgrounds perceive their city and the concept of public space and how territories are managed and architecturally designed, how spaces are exploited and social interaction takes place in addition to exploring the relation between the center and the periphery and manifestations of this very one. One of the major objectives of the project is to bring together a diverse group of young Lebanese artists and students with different affiliations and from different neighborhoods of Beirut.
